How It Works
Everything is converted through grams. One tola is 11.6638 grams, the British-Indian tola of 180 troy grains rounded to four decimal places. On this page a tola divides into 16 aana and, separately, into 100 lal, so one aana is 0.7290 g and one lal is 0.1166 g. Because 16 and 100 do not divide evenly, one aana equals 6.25 lal; the breakdown therefore takes whole tola first, then whole aana, and leaves what remains in lal to two decimal places.

Aana and Lal: the Smaller Units
Jewelry rarely weighs a round number of tola, so the remainder is stated in aana and lal. This page uses 16 aana to the tola and 100 lal to the tola, the convention common in Nepal’s gold trade. Other conventions exist, including systems with a different number of lal to the tola, so when a slip looks wrong, ask the shop which one it uses.

The Indian 10 g "Tola"
India sold its gold by the tola before it went metric, and its rates are now quoted per 10 grams. That 10 g block is still loosely called a tola in some Indian markets, which causes real confusion when comparing prices across the border: 10 g is only 0.857 of a Nepali tola. Before comparing a per-tola rate in Nepal with a per-10-gram rate in India, convert one to the other. Multiplying the Indian 10 g rate by 1.16638 gives the price of one 11.6638 g tola at that rate.
Weight is only half of a gold price. Purity, stated in karats, and making charges are separate, and a making charge quoted as a percentage is easiest checked with the percentage calculator. For weights outside the jewelry trade, such as a parcel or a recipe, the general weight converter covers ounces, pounds and kilograms.
Other Nepali Measures
The tola is one of several traditional units still in daily use in Nepal. Land is measured in ropani and aana in the hills and bigha and kattha in the Terai; the ropani and aana converter handles both systems. Important Edge Cases
- Shops sometimes round the tola to 11.66 or 11.664 g; across 10 tola that rounding moves the result by up to about 0.04 g.
- The aana–lal breakdown leaves at most 6.24 lal over, because a 6.25-lal remainder would already be a whole aana.
- A troy ounce (31.1035 g) is heavier than the everyday ounce (28.35 g); bullion is always priced in troy ounces.
Limitations
- The converter weighs; it does not price. It has no live gold or silver rates.
- Purity, hallmarking and making charges are outside a weight conversion.
- Lal conventions vary between markets; this page uses 100 lal to the tola throughout.
