Conversion formula

Every conversion here uses the published factor, not a rounded one.

Example: Gigabytes to Megabytes

1 GB = 1,000 MB

To convert gigabytes to megabytes, multiply by 1,000:

2 GB = 2,000 MB

Figures on this page are shown to seven significant digits. The converter keeps the full precision and rounds only what it displays.

Did you know?

A kilobyte and a kibibyte are not the same: KB means 1,000 bytes, KiB means 1,024. Drive manufacturers use the first, and most operating systems report the second.

That is the whole reason a "1 TB" drive shows up as about 931 GiB once it is plugged in. Nothing is missing — the two labels just count differently.

Frequently asked questions

Is 1 GB 1000 MB or 1024 MB?

1 GB is 1,000 MB in SI decimal units. 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB in binary units. Storage makers often use GB (1000), while OS tools may show GiB.

How many MB is 1 GB?

1 GB is 1,000 MB when both use SI prefixes. 1 GiB is 1,024 MiB when both use binary prefixes. Do not mix GB with MiB without converting.

How many GB is 1 TB?

1 TB is 1,000 GB in SI units. 1 TiB is 1,024 GiB in binary units. Drive labels usually mean TB as 1,000 GB.

Why does my 1 TB drive show less space?

Makers advertise 1 TB as 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Many operating systems report that size in GiB, about 931 GiB. Formatting and recovery partitions also use space.
