Sequence Is the Last Step, Not the First

Reordering a file you are about to merge with another wastes the effort, because merging appends whole documents and disturbs the sequence again. Combine first, then order.

Scanned batches usually need more than sequencing: pages fed the wrong way up need rotating, and pages that do not belong are quicker to split out than to shuffle to the end.

What Reordering Can Affect

Page contents and dimensions are copied, but changing page sequence can affect features whose meaning depends on page position. A simple fixture lost source metadata and the AcroForm catalog when pages were copied into a new container, even though its page annotation array was present.

  • Internal page links may no longer lead to the intended nearby content.
  • Bookmarks, page labels, forms, annotations, and document metadata are not guaranteed in the newly created PDF.
  • Any existing digital signature may become invalid because the document bytes and page structure change.
  • External web links printed or embedded on a page may still work when copied, but should be checked.

Reordering Example

A scanned packet arrives as cover, page 2, page 1, signature. Moving source page 3 above source page 2 produces cover, page 1, page 2, signature. The page image itself is not rotated or edited.
