What This Tool Provides

Enter a rupee amount in figures and get it in words in English and in Nepali, grouped the Nepali way in lakh and crore, with paisa and the "Only" or मात्र ending a cheque line needs. The figures are also shown with Nepali comma grouping and with Western grouping, so you can check a large amount both ways.

  • The amount in English words, such as "One Lakh Rupees Only"
  • The amount in Nepali words, such as "एक लाख रुपैयाँ मात्र"
  • Figures grouped 12,34,567 and 1,234,567
  • The figure as written in a cheque box, such as 1,00,000/-

How to Use This Tool

  1. Enter the amount in figuresCommas and a leading Rs. are fine; up to two decimal places are read as paisa.
  2. Read both languagesEnglish and Nepali words update as you type.
  3. Copy the line you needCopy the words with "Only" or मात्र, and the figure for the box.

How It Works

The amount is split from the largest unit down: kharab (खर्ब, 100 billion), arab (अर्ब, 1 billion), crore (करोड, 10 million), lakh (लाख, 100,000), thousand (हजार) and hundred (सय), each with a count from 1 to 99, then whatever is left below 100. Nepali has a separate word for every number from 1 to 99, so the converter looks each count up in a fixed list rather than building it from tens and ones the way English does. Paisa are the first two decimal places, and amounts that would need a third decimal place are refused rather than rounded.

Worked Examples

A cheque for twelve lakh with paisa

Input
12,34,567.50
Output
Twelve Lakh Thirty-Four Thousand Five Hundred Sixty-Seven Rupees and Fifty Paisa Only · बाह्र लाख चौँतीस हजार पाँच सय सतसट्ठी रुपैयाँ पचास पैसा मात्र

The figure groups as 12 lakh, 34 thousand, 567, and each count reads as its own word.

One lakh, whole rupees

Input
100000
Output
One Lakh Rupees Only · एक लाख रुपैयाँ मात्र · 1,00,000/-

A whole amount gets "/-" after the figure, the common way to show there are no paisa.

Two and a half crore

Input
25000000
Output
Two Crore Fifty Lakh Rupees Only · दुई करोड पचास लाख रुपैयाँ मात्र

In Western grouping that is 25,000,000, or 25 million.

Lakh, Crore and Western Grouping

Nepal groups the last three digits, then every two: 1,00,000 rather than 100,000. The units below are the ones a large amount is read in.

Writing the Amount on a Cheque

The amount line is the part of a cheque most worth getting exactly right. A few habits keep it unambiguous:

  • Start the words at the very beginning of the line and leave no gaps, so nothing can be added in front or in between.
  • End the words with "Only" in English or मात्र in Nepali, and draw a line through any space left after it.
  • Write the figure in the box with its grouping commas and "/-" after a whole amount: 1,00,000/-.
  • State paisa in both places: "and Fifty Paisa Only" in words, 1,00,000.50 in the box.
  • Make the words and the figure agree exactly. A cheque whose two amounts differ can be returned, so if you make a mistake, write a new cheque rather than correcting it.

The Rest of the Cheque or Form

The date line deserves the same care: if you date a cheque or letter in Bikram Sambat, convert the date rather than estimating it. The payee’s name can be typed in Devanagari when a form asks for Nepali. For the numbers behind a payment, work out a loan installment or check a percentage before you write the cheque.

Nepali Number Words, 1 to 99

Every number below 100 has its own word in Nepali. Find the tens down the side and the ones across the top. Spellings follow the standard this converter uses, including chandrabindu in चौँतीस and पैँतीस.

Important Edge Cases

  • Paisa on their own read as paisa only: 0.75 gives "Seventy-Five Paisa Only".
  • A single decimal digit means tens of paisa: 125000.5 is 1,25,000.50.
  • English words use no "and" inside the rupees, as in One Thousand One; "and" appears only before paisa.
  • A leading Rs. or रु. and any commas are ignored, so you can paste an amount as written.

Limitations

  • Amounts above 99,99,99,99,99,999 (99 kharab) are refused; there is no larger unit to name them with.
  • Some writers say "One Hundred Crore" instead of "One Arab". The converter uses arab and kharab throughout.
  • It writes the words; it does not check a bank’s own rules for its cheques.
