The formula behind it
GPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σ(credits). Each letter grade maps to points on the 4.0 scale, and courses with more credits count more.
Example: An A in a 4-credit course (16 points) and a B in a 3-credit course (9 points) give 25 points over 7 credits, a GPA of about 3.57.

Most US colleges use the 4.0 scale, but some schools weigh honors or AP courses on a 5.0 scale. This tool uses the unweighted 4.0 scale.
