What the result explains
What This Calculator Provides
Enter a birth date and an as-of date to calculate completed calendar age. The result separates years, months, and days, then also reports completed months, total elapsed weeks and days, and the next birthday. Unlike subtracting birth years, the calculation checks whether the birthday has occurred and borrows across real month boundaries. It uses Gregorian leap-year rules and can calculate age on today, a past date, or a future as-of date that is not before the birth date.
- completed years, months, and days
- total completed months, weeks, and elapsed days
- next birthday and days remaining

Method
Formula and Calculation Method
Calendar age method
Calendar age subtracts date components and borrows across month boundaries.
- Start with the birth date.
- Advance by whole years without passing the as-of date.
- Advance by whole months, then count remaining elapsed days.
Calendar units vary in length, so an exact age cannot be found by dividing elapsed days by 365 or months by 30.

Worked Examples
Published example: From 1 January 2000 to 1 January 2025 is exactly 25 years.
Birthday already occurred in the as-of year
- Birth date: March 10, 1990
- As-of date: August 13, 2026
- March 10 has already passed in 2026.
Result: Calendar age = 36 years, 5 months, and 3 days.
Birthday has not occurred yet
- Birth date: December 20, 2000
- As-of date: August 13, 2026
- The December birthday is still ahead, so 26 years are not complete.
Result: Calendar age = 25 years, 7 months, and 24 days.
Dates Are the Hard Part
An age is one specific case of date arithmetic. When the two endpoints are not a birthday and today, the date difference calculator gives the same years, months, and days between any pair, along with a plain elapsed-day count.
Dates stored by software rarely look like dates. If yours arrived as a number such as 1755561600, convert the epoch value before entering it here.
Why current year minus birth year can be wrong
Subtracting 2000 from 2026 gives 26, but that is only correct after the 2026 birthday. Before the birthday, only 25 full years have elapsed. The same issue applies to months and days, which is why this calculator advances through completed calendar units.
Leap years and month lengths
February can have 28 or 29 days, while other months have 30 or 31. For calendar arithmetic, a February 29 anniversary in a non-leap year is treated as the last day of February. This convention is useful for elapsed-age math but may not match every jurisdiction’s legal rule.
Calendar age versus elapsed time
“36 years, 5 months, 3 days” describes completed calendar units. Total days and total weeks describe elapsed time. Both are valid, but they answer different questions and should not be converted from one another using fixed month or year lengths.
Practical Uses
- Completing forms that request age on a particular date
- Checking school or event eligibility dates
- Planning birthday milestones
- Calculating age at a past event
- Comparing age with a project or employment date
Assumptions
- Dates use the Gregorian calendar.
- The as-of date is on or after the birth date.
- A February 29 anniversary becomes the last day of February in a non-leap year for this calculation.
Important Limitations
- The result does not determine legal age under every jurisdiction.
- Time of birth, time zones, and exact elapsed hours are not included.
- Historical calendars before local Gregorian adoption are not modeled.
Help & support
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about the Age calculator.
How old am I today?
Leave the as-of date set to today, enter your birth date, and the result will show completed calendar years, months, and days.
Can I calculate age on a past date?
Yes. Select any as-of date on or after the birth date.
Does the age calculator account for leap years?
Yes. It validates Gregorian leap dates and uses the actual number of days in each month.
Why is current year minus birth year not always the exact age?
That subtraction ignores whether the birthday has occurred in the selected year.
What happens for a February 29 birthday?
For calendar arithmetic, the anniversary is clamped to February 28 in a non-leap year.
