What This Tool Provides

Enter a Gregorian (AD) date and get the Bikram Sambat date the way it is written in Nepal: year, month name in Devanagari, day and weekday, plus the fiscal year it falls in. It covers 14 April 1943 to 13 April 2027, the span for which every month length is settled.

  • The BS date in English and in Devanagari, such as २०८३ असोज १५
  • The weekday in Nepali (आइतबार to शनिबार)
  • The fiscal year (आर्थिक वर्ष) the date belongs to
  • Today’s date in both calendars, in Nepal time

How to Use This Tool

  1. Choose the AD dateUse the date picker or type a date from 14 April 1943 to 13 April 2027.
  2. Read the BS dateThe result shows the BS year, month and day, the weekday and the fiscal year.
  3. Copy the form you needCopy the Devanagari form for a Nepali document or the numeric form for a spreadsheet.

How It Works

The converter counts the days between your date and 14 April 1943, which was 1 Baisakh 2000 BS, then walks forward through the published length of every BS month until that count is used up. What is left is the day of the month. Because the month lengths come from a table, not a formula, a date that sits on a month boundary converts correctly in every year the table covers, and a date outside the table is refused rather than estimated.

Worked Examples

An American birth date

Input
July 4, 1990
Output
20 Asar 2047 BS · २०४७ असार २०, बुधबार

Early July is late in Asar, the last month of the Nepali fiscal year, so this date is in fiscal year 2046/47.

Christmas Day 2026

Input
December 25, 2026
Output
10 Poush 2083 BS · fiscal year 2083/84

Poush begins in mid-December, so late December is early Poush.

The first day of a fiscal year

Input
July 17, 2026
Output
1 Shrawan 2083 BS · fiscal year 2083/84

The day before, July 16, was 32 Asar 2083, the last day of fiscal year 2082/83.

When You Need a BS Date

Anything filed with a Nepali government office expects Bikram Sambat. That includes applications at a district administration office, land and tax paperwork, letters to a ward office, and forms an embassy or consulate passes back to Nepal. People abroad often know their own dates only in AD: a US birth certificate, a passport issue date, a degree completion date. Writing those on a Nepali form means converting each one.

If a form also asks for an age or a duration, compute the age in years and days or count the days between two dates on the AD side first, then convert the dates. For dates that start out in BS, use the BS to AD converter.

Fiscal Years in AD: When Each One Starts and Ends

The fiscal year starts on 1 Shrawan and ends on the last day of Asar. Because Asar has 31 or 32 days and Shrawan’s start moves with it, the AD boundary shifts by a day from year to year. A US date in early or mid-July can fall in either fiscal year, so convert it rather than assuming.

Why Festival Dates Move on the AD Calendar

Bikram Sambat months are solar: each one begins when the sun enters the next sign of the zodiac, which is why 1 Baisakh always lands on 13 or 14 April and 1 Magh, Maghe Sankranti, always lands in mid-January. A festival tied to one of those solar dates barely moves on either calendar.

Most of the big festivals are not solar. Dashain, Tihar and Teej are set by tithi, the lunar day, so they follow the moon. A lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a solar one, which is why Dashain can fall in late September one year and late October another, moving on the BS calendar as well as the AD one. Converting a festival date from one year therefore tells you nothing about the next year: look each year up in that year’s published calendar, then convert the date you find. To plan around the gap, count the days between two converted dates.

Important Edge Cases

  • A date between January 1 and mid-April is in the BS year that is AD + 56; from mid-April on it is AD + 57.
  • July 15 to 17 straddles the fiscal-year change, and the exact day differs by year.
  • The date picker uses your browser’s calendar; the conversion itself does not depend on your time zone.
  • The weekday is identical in both calendars, so a converted date never changes day of the week.

Limitations

  • Only 14 April 1943 to 13 April 2027 is covered. Later dates wait for the almanac to settle 2084 BS onward.
  • It does not convert to Nepal Sambat or give tithis, so it cannot tell you which day a lunar festival falls on.
  • The end date of fiscal year 2083/84 depends on the month lengths of 2084 BS, so it is not shown.

Questions About This Tool

What is today’s date in Nepal?

The converter shows it above the result, worked out from the current time in Kathmandu (UTC+5:45), in both calendars.

Which fiscal year is a July date in?

It depends on the year. Fiscal years change on 1 Shrawan, which has fallen on July 16 or July 17 in recent years. Convert the date and read the fiscal year the result shows.

How do I write the BS date in Nepali?

The usual order is year, month, day: २०८३ असोज १५. The converter shows that form ready to copy, with the weekday after it.

Why is my 2027 date refused?

Dates from 14 April 2027 fall in 2084 BS, whose month lengths had not been settled when this table was built. The converter refuses them rather than risk a wrong day.

Does the conversion depend on my time zone?

No. A calendar date converts to the same BS date anywhere. Only the "today" line uses Nepal time, because that is the date shown on calendars in Nepal.
